Kevin and Anne 2011 Trips

j) Wave Rock to Nullarbor

Thursday 5th May

   Albany to Southern Cross

Left Albany early and headed north towards Wave Rock. As we drove along an interesting range of mountains - the Stirling Ranges came into view.

We drove

along roads edged by salt lakes.

Surprised to see this large fish skeleton next to empty lake??

                                                                                                        Passed road trains

                                    and huge wheat fields

We arrived at Wave Rock early in the afternoon.

and the view from on top

As it was still early we decided to drive on , we travelled mainly on dirt roads even through roadworks and arrived in Southern Cross late in the afternoon. Here we found a room for the night. Two star but expensive country motel.

Friday 6th May

    Southern Cross to Balladonia

Left Southern Cross early - glad to leave that motel behind. The sun had just risen as we headed along the highway towards Kalgoorlie.

We arrived in Kalgoorlie about 9am.

After shopping we drove through town to the Super Pit.

Then it was back on the road to Norseman where the Eyre Highway begins. After lunch at Norseman we began our drive to Balladonia.

We were glad to reach the Balladonia Roadhouse in the late afternoon and check into our motel room. (a 500+ km day)

NO mobile signal or internet at Balladonia

Saturday 7th May

  Balladonia Roadhouse to Nullarbor Roadhouse

This motel room at the roadhouse was much better than the previous night's.

Outside our room at Balladonia.

                                                                    The Balladonia Roadhouse.

It was early but not as early as yesterday when we left.

Soon we were on the longest straight stretch of road in Australia.

We passed caravans and trucks all day but very few cars and SUVs.

There were 4 places along the road we drove which were designated as landing strips for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

All the way along the road there were quirky works of art  featuring discarded clothing.

After stopping for lunch at Eucla we crossed the border into SA.

More straight roads

In some places it was less than a kilometre to the Great Australian Bight.

Our Roadhouse "Motel" room for tonight. Great to get here after a 730km day but $1.99 it was our most expensive petrol

Another sunset, this time across the Nullarbor .
